Mary’s Soul Art Day Interview

What shaped you as an artist?

Many things have shaped my practice – curiosity, looking at paintings by artists I love, listening to good advice and connecting with other artists. One of the biggest hurdles has been to strip back the imposter syndrome that holds so many people back and to proclaim the name – artist. To know that I am worthy of good art supplies and to keep practicing, exploring, playing and experimenting. Mostly I have learned to trust my instincts and keep painting without too much focus on outcome. The best paintings always happen when you get into flow state.

What inspires you?

I love natural forms and I am known for my palm tree paintings, happy trees and meadows. I love work by artists who use colour boldly. Travel has always inspired my imagery but my work is primarily about expressing emotion through symbolism. A palm tree can become a party, a relationship or a place with the subject simply a conduit for the emotion I am feeling in the moment as I paint.

Why do you make art?

I make art because it makes me happy. I like to convey emotions of optimism. Of course I know the world is not an easy place for everyone all the time but I aim to make my paintings a colour burst in the room as an antidote to adversity. People tell me that my work makes them feel happy.
