Sue’s Soul Art Day Interview

How is the reality of being an artist different than the dream of being an artist?

The dream of just creating art all day every day is very appealing, but the reality of being a full time artist means wearing all the different hats in order to follow that dream. I am my own accountant, social media manager and event organiser and sometimes this means there are days when I really have so much ‘other’ stuff to do, that it can be hard to carve out time for actually making art. It also means showing up to create even when I am tired or lacking inspiration, which requires a great deal of self-discipline and dedication.

What keeps you making art?

There has always been a bone-deep urge to create inside of me, so I cannot imagine a life in which I DON’T make art, but I think what drives me forwards is to be constantly learning . It’s a never ending journey of evolution and discovery. The thrill and satisfaction of completing a new piece of art also drives me forward and sparks excitement for what might happen when creating the next!

What do you love about your art?

I love the freedom and sense of reaching deep inside of myself. I feel that my art expresses things that I cannot say in words and I am sometimes surprised at the emotions that show up and flow through my work when I lose myself in creating. I also love the special moment when another person connects to a piece of my work. We are not always there to witness this in person, depending on where your art might be displayed, but on a few occasions I have been lucky enough to personally share in that experience and it was profoundly emotional and unforgettable.
