Tamara’s Soul Art Day Interview

What does it mean to be an artist to you?

Being an artist, for me, is basically how I make sense of all the noise, both out in the world and rattling around in my own head. There’s a lot I’ve been through, a lot I feel, and honestly, words don’t always cut it. Sometimes I don’t even know what’s going on inside me until I make something weird and go, “Oh! That’s what that is!”. Art is like emotional detective work, sometimes I am Sherlock Holmes and other times I am Inspector Clouseau! It’s not always pretty, but it’s real, and it helps me uncover who I actually am, bit by bit.

What keeps you making art?

A mix of compulsion, curiosity, and the occasional spark of “wow, that actually came out kind of cool!” Making art is how I process a lot of things, so when I am not making art, I feel a bit scattered and hollow. It’s also one of the few things that makes me feel fully present, and where my inner dialogue is more exploratory.

What matters most to you when it comes to your art?

The satisfaction of being true to myself, and having fun. It might be a prettier painting if I didn’t add something weird to it, it might be more serious if there weren’t a bunch of puns, but those things don’t satisfy me. My best sessions are when I can look at something, think “I’m such a weirdo” and giggle.
