Sandie’s Soul Art Day Interview

What does it mean to be an artist to you?

Freedom. I didn’t know I was going to say that until you asked. But there is a freedom to explore spaces, energies, colors and realms in a way that captures something ephemeral to me. And often the joy and energies of creation flow out and I desire to share it with others, some of whom receive it and whether they do or not, there’s a flow that continues on beyond the art. How does it get any more miraculous than that?

How would you describe your creative process?

Art—whether visual or in words—is always an exploration, an adventure. I never know where it will lead, just as when I used to step into the Void and then come out to journey, finding out what animal I was (since my strongest connection has been with animal spirits) along the way. Colors—I love colors—talk to me and speak up who wants to play next and where. It’s an amazing interaction of step by step by step, listening and applying colors to a canvas or words to a page, and at the end being surprised by what’s come forth and uncovering symbols and messages for a while after. How does it get any better than that?

If your art could talk, what would it say?

I love this question! As a creative shamana, all things are alive with their own consciousness for me, so this is right up my alley. And their energies flow out and have gotten bolder and bolder in their expression over time, as have I. Although my art has always been bolder than I’ve perceived myself to be…and then I grow and over time find out, oh yes, I really am that! I’m always “Me? That came out of me?” when I first make it and it’s “Yes!! This is the full you that’s inside, bursting to break free!! Be more of me! Play more with and as me!!” And the magical thing is, I don’t consciously do anything, yet after weeks or months I look back and realize I am living it in a way I wasn’t then.

Other times it whispers, “See the magic that you are? Remember the magical realms you’ve cavorted in—keep playing with us, we desire to create with you. Whether others see it or not—and we hope they do, more people could use magic too, but whether they do or not is not the point. That you acknowledge you and the magical being you be can change the world. Let go of the how, of whether it does or doesn’t, rejoice in you, in me, in us, in we. And enjoy it and us fully!!!”

About Sandie Hum

Sandie Hum plays in multidimensional spaces as a Creative Life Artist and Facilitator. From experiencing spontaneous shamanic journeys starting over 23 years ago — she jokingly says one day it was like having a safari in her living room as she did yoga — to reveling in the transformative tools & bodywork of Access Consciousness, weaving in capacities with administration, human resources and finance and rejoicing in creative outlets such as Soul Art and ARTbundance, she brings her wide-ranging interests together to explore with her clients and class participants their own wisdom, awarenesses and discoveries that they didn’t even realize they had and also relaxing, nurturing and transforming their bodies and being into the spaces they desire and more.
